The 2022 Mercedes-AMG S63e Plug-In Hybrid has been spotted, and it isn’t hiding much

The new Mercedes S-Class has a wide range of powerplant options, from inline sixes to the powerful V12 reserved for the extra-long version. As part of the company’s roster of electrified performance automobiles, an AMG with the E-Performance name will shortly join the Benz and Maybach models.

Our spies have discovered a thinly disguised prototype of the S63e (name not verified yet), revealing its plug-in hybrid nature by flaunting gasoline caps on both rear fenders. The Panamericana grille, wider air vents, decreased ride height, massive brakes, and a quad exhaust flanking the rear diffuser are all clear indicators that we’re dealing with the AMG version.

Duct tape is used to secure wires in place that appear to be running from inside the cabin, through the driver’s side rear door, and below the vehicle. By testing the electrified sporty limo near and at the Nürburgring, AMG must be making some last-minute changes to the hybrid S63. The official reveal is likely to happen sooner rather than later, based on the light camouflage.

According to rumors, the S63e will combine a twin-turbo V8 gasoline engine with an electric motor for a combined output of over 700 horsepower. Some reports claim that an even hotter S73e with around 800 horsepower is in the works, which would serve as an indirect successor to the S65. Both AMGs will almost certainly come standard with all-wheel drive and an automated transmission.

Keep in mind that another 800-hp AMG is on the way, as a new flagship version of the recently facelifted GT 4-Door Coupe with an electrified V8 will be introduced in the coming months. The F1-engined One hypercar, which will be delivered to clients later this year after many delays, will undoubtedly be the crown jewel of Affalterbach’s forthcoming electrified family.
